The LIFT program has been in operation since September 1997 and is a vital component in the comprehensive Homeless Continuum of Care (CoC) for Lee County.
The local Continuum of Care Plan includes outreach, shelter, transitional, supportive, and ultimately, permanent housing. LIFT is not intended to be a "first responder" to homelessness but is down the road after the household has been stabilized. Once stabilized, and on the road to self-sufficiency, families and individuals may be unable to move themselves into permanent housing due to the high expenses associated with securing a place to live. This program is that final "lift" to get out of homelessness by providing coordination of services and financial resources to help them reach their goals of securing and maintaining housing and self-sufficiency.
LIFT is not an entitlement or income subsidy program.
It is a housing and self-sufficiency program.
The primary source of funding for LIFT is provided by the Federal HUD SHP (Supportive Housing Program) through the McKinney-Vento Act. LIFT may also receive State Challenge and County fund financial support. Applicants need to meet the HUD or Challenge definition of homelessness to be eligible for LIFT.
